Games and Culture: A Journal of Interactive Media is a new, quarterly international journal that publishes innovative theoretical and empirical research about games and culture within interactive media. The journal serves as a premiere outlet for ground-breaking work in the field of game studies.
Games and Culture’s scope includes the socio-cultural, political, and economic dimensions of gaming from a wide variety of perspectives, including textual analysis, political economy, cultural studies, ethnography, critical race studies, gender studies, media studies, public policy, international relations, and communication studies. Other arenas include the following:
Issues of gaming culture related to race, class, gender, and sexuality
Issues of game development
Textual and cultural analysis of games as artifacts
Issues of political economy and public policy in both US and international arenas

Downtown Development Map Now Online

It’s fun every once in a while when a work project intersects with what I’m interested in Downtown. Working at Cartifact, where we do plenty of Downtown maps, that happens more often than it might in a lot of other contexts.
Several weeks ago a new map we did started running in the weekly issues of the Downtown News. A special map for the recent Development Issue highlighted all the projects going on Downtown. As of a few days ago you can now find that Downtown Development Map online and follow along with the grid coordinates given in the development listings. It’s not a full interactive like the Downtown Los Angeles Interactive Map we did with DCBID, but I think it’s a cool way to make the map useful online.

What is this atop a building in Vancouver? It looks functional but also too deliberate (the way the straps are integrated with the edge of the building) to be temporary. It has an Oldenberg kind of feel to it - silly and big. What is going on here?

Grass Your Wall, by Ustatic

How about a green air-purifying grass wall in your apartment? Believe it or not, it’s possible without having a mess thank to these grass panels from Argentinean company Ustatic. The “Wall Grass” is a system of grass rectangular panels, which function with a structural substrate, a humidity retainer substrate with small conducts that warrantee the homogeneous distribution of water in the entire surface, and a basement formed by the grass’ roots, which add support. The grass can be used for decoration or as an alternative for small spaces without a backyard, and is supposed to have the same sir purifying qualities than regular grass. Though it’s still a prototype, the product is actually being produced next year in Argentina, and will probably be available for exportation. The company has even some distributors defined, so those interested can get in touch with them through their website. On the other hand, for all of you who are willing to take the treehugging a little further, the company has also an air-purifying suit planning to be developed in the next year. The City Remixed

A local design promotional platform called INOUT, challenged 12 creative young designers and professionals to redesign their city’s landscape. The resulting entries were both fresh and thought provoking i.e. ‘Drinking Trough’ by Axel Jaccard, that collects water so that city animals can drank from it or Adrien Rovero’s ‘6 Bicycles vs. One Car’ which is a bike park that occupies a single carpark space.
