Dasparkhotel, The Park Pipe Hotel
by admin on January 26th, 2007

In a public park in Linz, Austria, three drain pipes have been converted into mini hostel/hotel rooms. Called Dasparkhotel, each room comes with a double bed, linens, a side table and a bed light. The guest is asked to pay what they can for the room. As for amenties such as a bathroom, guests at Dasparkhotel use the park’s public toilets, and nearby restaurants for food.
This project is great not only because it gives surprising new life to, well, a drainpipe, but the hotel is also “pay what you can,” leaving it up to the guests to be the judge of the project’s success.

Kiruna: The Town that Cracking Apart
by admin on January 25th, 2007

The Town of Kiruna in Sweden is cracking apart. Like an earthquake in slow motion the ground near Kiruna cracks and sinks in an ever widening circle which is beginning to tear apart the city. A huge Iron ore Mine to the west of the town has caused the earth to subside around the mine at an ever expanding rate, and like an earthquake, the earth displaces in an ever widening circle creating cracks and subsidence and destroying buildings. This slow motion earthquake will last another 100 years has already begin to encroach into the city and will reach the centre soon. What’s the solution? The town will have to move.

Geology in the Bathroom
by admin on January 22nd, 2007

Gore Design Co. has made a name for itself since its 2004 inception by creating design-forward, environmentally responsible products for residential and commercial application. Today I earmarked Gore’s Erosion Sink for when I build my first house. It may be the digital cartographer in me coming out (that was a former job of mine), but I love how Gore uses contour lines to step down the elevation of this sink into the off-set drain area. The sink is made of concrete — as are many of Gore’s designs — which is “organic, timeless, a true reflection of nature’s beauty.” I find myself falling for concrete more and more as a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing building ingredient– it’s a material for which the possibilities are endless.

New Tower in Dubai: “iPad” inspirated by iPod
by admin on January 3rd, 2007
Dubai-based real estate firm Omniyat Properties plans to construct a tall building in Dubai modeled after the Apple iPod. The name of the 24-story tower: iPad. Architects James Law Cybertecture International will design, and the structure will sit over a six-degree-angled “docking station,” just as the ipod does on its docking station. I can’t find any official announcements on the websites of the architects or the developers, but here are some other news references: Gulf News, Guardian, CNN, ITP.net, and an industry trade release here. Link to a blog post at Italian architecture blog salatti.net. with lots of images.
