Stacked Stools

This piece at APAP was a beautiful room built out of stacked plastic stools. Light filtered through the yellow stools casts a warm glow on everything. I would love to have a room like this somewhere in my home. It would make a nice meditative spot.

colourful are Berlin's nights

with springtime coming people are returning to public spaces and the city regathers its noisy public life, something I really cherish, for therein lies the very enchantment of any city. Public buildings do provide though the unique frame in which this urban buzz and life are shaping. So they ARE important and kind of determining. The Sony-Center with all its futuristic display has been accepted by people for the very means it offers to enjoy public life! Hundreds of people are sitting each night underneath this neonmargarita roof with its changing colours, enjoying the play of the fountain, the drinks and food offered by all those cafés and restaurants and many are making good use of the free wireless network that can be accessed while sitting there. So you see dozens of computer geeks with their laptops enjoying the free ride ;)

80 South Street Update: Shining a FLW Light on Design

We’d normally pass this along to our compatriots in The Gutter for their Police Blotter, but who can resist a reader-submitted allegation that Santiago Calatrava plagiarized that master organic lampmaker Frank Lloyd Wright? Above at left, the Wright Taliesin 2 Floor Lamp: “Originally designed for Wright’s Hillside Home School’s converted gymnasium … Wright used these lights in his own home, Taliesin,” available for only $2,850. At right, the Calatrava Tower O’ Penthouses, proposed for 80 South St., but still waiting for Buyer No. 1 when last we checked; units available for about 10,000 times the price of the lamp.

Is this the kitchen of the future? Innovative
architect Zaha Hadid partnered with Corian and Ernestomeda to create the Z Island by DuPont Corian. The kitchen
island, which was shown off at Milan Design week, has two free-standing island units, one for "fire" and one
for "water," a modular wall cabinet, a wall covering system with special light and sound diffusion
capabilities, and a long work bench. The main island unit can change from a  horizontal cooking and eating
surface  into a vertical digital surface with an  LCD screen for TV or computer use and an iPod. The cooking
area has a special heating plate and the main island has a touch control panel. The wall treatment has acoustic
properties and a customized LEDs that allows the user to change the music and lighting. The kitchen island even has a
scent diffusion system that can be programmed to dispense different scents throughout the day. Pictures of the Z island
in Milan can be found at designws.com.
