Eco-friendly Dino Sofa
by Ami Kealoha on April 30th, 2006

Rome-based Central Unit Design, a four-person architect-design collective, introduced their sectional Dino Sofa at Milan’s Salone Satellite earlier this month. Designed for indoor and outdoor use in public places like museums, airports, and parks, the animalized seating is made of Waterlily and Framefoam, both eco-friendly materials. Though not yet in production, each vertebrae-like section is intended for two people and makes the transition outdoors with a new method called “oven painting.” Check out another image showing the Dino’s whimsical possibilities after the jump and a close up on Mocoloco.

Camping and the parking space
by Regine on April 26th, 2006
(P) LOT, an ongoing project by Michael Rakowitz (of the notorious paraSITE), questions the occupation of public space and encourages reconsiderations of “legitimate” participation in city life.

Instead of using municipal parking spaces to store vehicles, P (LOT) proposes to rent them for alternative purposes. The acquisition of municipal permits and simple payment of parking meters could enable citizens to, for example, establish temporary encampments or use the leased ground for different kinds of activities. A first initiative turns ordinary car covers into portable tents, available for loan at the MUMOK, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna. Interested citizens have the choice to use one of five covers ranging from a common Sedan to a luxurious Porsche or motorcycle.

with springtime coming people are returning to public spaces and the city regathers its noisy public life, something I really cherish, for therein lies the very enchantment of any city. Public buildings do provide though the unique frame in which this urban buzz and life are shaping. So they ARE important and kind of determining. The Sony-Center with all its futuristic display has been accepted by people for the very means it offers to enjoy public life! Hundreds of people are sitting each night underneath this neonmargarita roof with its changing colours, enjoying the play of the fountain, the drinks and food offered by all those cafés and restaurants and many are making good use of the free wireless network that can be accessed while sitting there. So you see dozens of computer geeks with their laptops enjoying the free ride
